Orach
Purple    (Atriplex hortensis, "purple savoyed" )                     

Beautiful ornamental variety,
with slightly crinkled purple leaves. Orach is a great spinach substitute, with a flavor similar to swiss chard or spinach. Leaves can be cooked like spinach and they retain their color. Production is spread out all season. Pick smaller leaves for extra tenderness. Tall plant, about 1,5  m high. Striking plant in the vegetable garden. Click thumbnails for close-ups. About a quarter of seedlings will sprout green (select purples for final planting).

Browallia americana 
   

Annual. Bushy plant covered with beautiful bluish-purple flowers. Slightly scented. Plant is about 1 m high by l m large. Blooms from July until sept/oct. Small flowers, about 1,8 cm long (3/4 inch), reminiscent of myosotis, produced in abundance all over a well branched plant. Full sun to part shade. Surface sow (dot not cover seeds). Aka Jamaican Forget-Me-Not, Amethyst Flower or Bush Violet.

Pumpkin "Early Sweet Sugar" 
 
Great all-around pumpkin with sweet, fine flesh. One of the best for making pumpkin pies. Good for canning too. Harvest and roast seeds for a nutritious snack. Medium size fruits (18-20 cm), easy to carry around. 6-8 lbs. Early varieity, at 90 days.

Winter Squash Blue Hubbard       
(C. maxima)

Large winter squash with blue-gray bumpy skin. Somewhat, bulbous or elongated shape. Thick orange flesh, fine textured. Like potatoes, Blue Hubbards can be used to make french fries. They can also be added to purees, soups, pies, muffins, etc. Nice ornamental. Very hard skin. Keeps well, for up to 6 months. Large running vines, needs space. Big squash, averaging 4 to 6 kilos, but up to 16 (40 lbs). 110 days.

Coztomatl    (Costomatl)    
  Physalis coztomatl, costomatl

A rather unknown Physalis species producing small golden fruits, like groundcherries or goldenberries. Crawling plants (30-60 cm high) with blue-green foliage and purple stems. Small golden fruits (1-1,5 cm) with pleasant smell similar to goldenberries (P. peruviana). Take note however that all fruits produced in 2009 developed a bitter aftertaste (normal or not?). Later than groundcherries, at about 90 days. Rarely cultivated.

Poppy Danish Flag        (Papaver somniferum)

Annual. Large deep red flowers marked with a contrasting white cross at their center. Fringed petals. Blooms last from 2 to 4 weeks, and start usually around early summer. Height: 60-70 cm. Start in pots but be very carefull when transplanting (roots must not but disturbed at all). Full sun, part shade. Aka Danebrog Laced.

 Tomato Goliath

Big pink-red fruits with extra nice old-fashioned taste. Bold flavor and good acidity. Shape is somewhat flattened and often lobed.  Jumbo size: can reach more than one kilo. This is the non hybrid, open pollinated Goliath, not very big on production, but definitely big on taste! 85 days.

Tomato White Wax

Pumpkin shaped fruits with waxy skin. Pale cream color ripening to pale yellow at full maturity. Fruits are ribbed and flattened. Sweet flavor and low acidity. Medium size, 4 to 10 cm wide. Keeps well after harvest and good production. Around 75-80 days

Tomato White Zebra


The latest of the zebras, with cream skin and pale green stripes, then turning to yellow when fully ripe. Round fruits, medium size (4-6 cm). Nice zesty flavor, like Green Zebra. Best when not over-ripe. About 75 days. Rare variety.
